AC Unit for Basement

Depending on the size of your home and the capacity of your existing unit, you may need to purchase an AC unit to finish your basement. Being able to control the temperature will allow you to feel comfortable in the basement and use it more often or even invite guests. Additionally, basements tend to be humid and this may harm the things that you have in storage.

If you want to finish your basement, you will need to check if your existing AC unit can handle this addition.

Electrical

Once you have decided how you want to use this space, these next decisions will be much easier. You will need to take into account all the electrical devices that you will be using such as refrigerators, beverage coolers, microwaves, televisions, speakers, projector, etc… Additonally, outlet placement is important for easy access to charging devices. You will want to be able to reach your charging devices while sitting at a desk or sitting area. Considering these details will avoid having to buy and connect extensions cords. These can be a tripping hazard as well as an unpleasant sight.

Plumbing

For rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, plumbing will need to be updated according to your design. If you want a bar area with an ice maker or a sink, you will need to give these appliances a water line. In the bathroom, the toilet, shower, and sink will need plumbing.

Flooring to Finish your Basement

All types of floors will need care. Carpet holds dust and dirt which can be partially removed when vacuuming, but will need deep cleaning. For this you may need to hire professionals or buy and learn to use the equipment for this process. Most people now choose either hardwood, engineered hardwood, or luxury vynil planks (LVP).

LVP may be the best option financially and in regards to maintanence. It has a lifespan of 35-50 years and requires less care than solid and engineered hardwood.

Ceiling

There are three common ceiling options: drywall, shiplap, and panel. The drywall ceiling would provide a uniform look throughout your home. Howver, this option would be the most expensive as this process is more intricate. Although ceiling panels are cheaper and have a faster installation, these may not provide the aesthetic that you want.

How much does it cost to finish your basement?

You can expect your estimate to be anywhere from $30,000 – $60,000 depending on the specifics of your basement ideas as decribed above. However, this is a space that will bring value to your home. It will become a functional space to entertain or step out from the hustle and bustle of the main floor.
